Mission Statement
Navigating the Journey is a culmination of so many aspects of our grief journey. When we lost CarrieAnn life seemed to be full of unknowns, how do we navigate life with such a loss, and over time we found The Beading Hearts which has been a lifesaver for us, and we have met so many people with similar or the same stories.
I have been able to do a lot of service work, one of the things that I get to do is visit the Yaphank Correctional facility with some of the amazing women of the beading hearts. Strange to say one of my biggest joys comes from telling our stories and speaking with the inmates who are part of the SATP (Sheriff’s addiction and treatment program). They have opened my eyes to so many obstacles that they encounter when they are released.
When they are released one of the hardest things for them is transportation. Helping get them to where they need to be is why we started this foundation. In conjunction with the James Pinka Foundation which was founded by fellow angel mom Laurie Pinka, she started a crossfit program in the jail and when they are released she offers scholarships to crossfit. Crossfit has been shown to release similar endorphins as drug use. Unfortunately they don’t get to benefit from these scholarships due to lack of transportation. Navigating the Journey was started from listening to the stories of my fellow angel mom’s and people who are in the SATP program. Most of our angels didn’t have access to transportation due to loss of a driver’s license or no car and would always fall back to the people who they used drugs with to hang out with since it is comfortable and familiar and they unfortunately seem to be the ones who are always around. Navigating the Journey will be able to fulfill this need by providing transportation. So we need to stop the cycle and the stigma of substance use disorder and give them a chance to get to the necessary opportunities that are available to them to help keep them on their journey of recovery.
